Basic obediance training is not only recommended for puppies but older dogs as well.  Contrary to popular belief, it is never to late to show an old dog new tricks.  The basics include: Name recognition, Sit, stay, down, recalls and most importantly how to properly walk on leash.  We can also work on crate, and potty training.
